The Smiles of Two Refinace-ers

Five years and six months after this photo was taken....

This photo was taken.

Notice the change?
 Yeah, different hair.
Yes, they are more in love.
Yes, they are in the bank parking lot for the second photo.

BUT...
The best change is that the refinancing of our home mortgage saves us over $300 each month!
Hip, hip, hooray!  Its a big answer to our prayers.

Not a Pox. But Momma Gets Vigamox.

I've got an eye infection, which seriously hampers my ability to have any sort of fun (or normal life, really).
Thank God for Urgent Care open on Sunday mornings!  I was in so much pain I a likened it to pouring acid in my eyes and gave it the same pain rating as non-epidural birthing.

DHH has some weird rash, but the nurse I saw for my appointment this morning said it wasn't chicken pox.  Something else.  He's still battling a poor appetite and three of his premolars are coming in.  He's to the stage in his cold when he vomits up phlegm, so I think the worst is over!

Yesterday I told my husband I wish he was in the medical profession.  Today I asked him to become a wizard and cure us.  I am just thankful he can be our home health provider and source of entertainment this weekend!

PS - No photos of my pink eye today!  Or DHH's crusty, green mustache!

Our Weekend So Far: Possibility of Pox, Hunger Games, Cuddle Time, and Miley Cyrus

Only one member of our household is healthy, and he is feeling overworked and exhausted from taking care of a wife with allergies (and pink eye?) and indigestion and a son who is teething, has allergies, might have some sort of pox, and has more snot than we can imagine a small body is capable of making.

Bless him for his patience and kindness.

DHH mans his station at the door.
I didn't leave the house at all today, save for hanging clothes up on the line outside and taking a short walk around the neighborhood before baby bedtime.  It was great to just get time to rest.  I had two naps! One until 10 AM, when my boys went to the park and O'Reilly's and again when everyone slept at 2 PM.  Pretty sweet.
He was watching for his dad, who was mowing the lawn.

I did made a rockin supper though.  Its this cranberry walnut and feta salad with an Italian dressing (made from Good Seasons packet). And some pasta (I have decided that linguine is my favorite type/shape of pasta noodle and is far superior to any other noodle) with Tomato pesto and the meat and veggies from a chicken kabob I had left over.  It was SO GOOD (but now... indigestion!).
He really wanted out there!
We have done a lot of cuddling with our son and each other.  I didn't realize how much more clingy and huggy I am when I don't feel well.  Our son is just the same.  I really enjoyed is sweet, relaxed body even though it was warm with fever.  It took the chill that comes with my fever.

He kept saying... "Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad?".
I've been reading Hunger Games, which I knew was an awesome book and I thought I had read, but it turns out, I just perused it while it was on our book shelf. And its been there for a few years!  Now I am really interested in what will happen and how it is a social commentary on today's televised EVERYTHING and lack of compassion in the face of extreme violence.  Its good, and Laura, I think you can handle it.  I am pretty far into it and there are no adverse reactions like I had during Slumdog Millionaire in the first ten minutes.  It might get gory, though... I will let you know.  Anyway, its like we are having our first book club!  I love when he suggests we read something together.  Unfortunately, this is our first book together since Time Traveler's Wife and I think I need to read Lonesome Dove to repay him for reading all the books I suggest!

Can you see the drool, snot, and finger smears?  Imagine if I had a good camera!  Ew!

I Redboxed The Last Song because there were no good titles and I thought we might have a good laugh at it.  We are not N. Sparks fans, not typically.  We did predict there would be a lot of drama in this one... divorce, love affairs, death, upset parents... and we were right!  I also knew I would enjoy the little visual vacation.  I love the coastal scenes from all those movies... the house in Nights in Rodanthe  was almost good enough to make up for the foolishly sentimental plot line. But, this one was good. Still maudlin, but quite nice!  So much better than the last Dear John (which we cracked up in during the theater and bothered lots of teary eyed women, probably with military husbands or something).  This one wasn't 5th grade reading level and there was no cursing!  Seriously, a noticable lack of F words, even during a fist fight scene. Pretty cool!  During the saddest last fifteen minutes, our baby snuggled and enjoyed our company.  It was great.

He is so tall and clever that he reaches for the door handle and tries to slide it open.

Its bed time here in the Haid house, and I think we'll have to take turns with church services tomorrow what with our son's suspicious red splotches on his face and legs (hives? allergy to something? pox? only time will tell.)

5QFriday.

1. How many pets do you have?

None, which is totally enough for me.   I just don't get intrinsic or extrinsic rewards from animals.  People, sure!  I would much rather have a permanent house guest than a pet because I would hear about their life stories or enlist them in housework chores!

2. If you could switch places with anyone in the world for one day, who would it be?

Sometimes I would like to switch places with myself, like time traveling. I would like to go back to the summer of my 18th year, when I was the most carefree I've ever been and just have some easy, fast fun.  I would also like to be my 60 year old self one day, just to see how my life turned out!

3. What is your favorite money saving tip?

Stop buying disposable anything.  Buy it once, and use it over and over!  Including diapers, napkins, towels, etc.

4. What do you want your kids to be when they grow up?

Caring, honest, hard working, curious, and loved by a spouse.  I really want my son to enter a helping profession, like teaching or the medical field or social work.   To me, helping professions are the ones that are the most rewarding and take the most heart to accomplish.

5. What is your favorite quote?

In the depths of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer. (Albert Camus).

My Two Playful Guys.

How can I not have fun when these two are around?

New(ish) Cut and Color

This is the cut and color from 1.5 weeks ago! It has faded a bit, but
as you can see, it is still red!
The photo was taken this morning at our library by my friend who is
actually the height of the photo. She is nearly three and still has
shaky hands, but she did frame the photo up pretty well!

How I Enjoyed the Evening...

First, applying the lavender scented bedtime lotion to my son's freshly scrubbed skin.  Then, I enjoyed squirting some on his belly and watching him rub it in (and lick his fingers and make a horrified expression!).

Next, brief walk in our neighborhood, lasting approximately a half hour, including some chat time with our friends who live nearby.

Then listening to my husband read my son a book and tell him goodnight, to lay down, and that he loved him.

Then noticing the most brilliant hot pink, flame orange, and deep purple sunset outside our window.

Then discovering that my oven roasted tomatoes were done and ready to eat (I ate a whole pan! So good! You must try this! Especially NEL!).  The house smelled garlicky for it was roasted along with the dozen or so tomatoes.

Then, I realized it was cool enough to have the windows open and have a blanket on while I lounged on the couch with my tomato snack.  I love that!

And then the icing on the cupcake...

Finally, realizing that I have the chance to rekindle my love affair with the show Glee after two long months of Thursday softball games.  What a delightful show.  Tonight's episode was when Britney says, "Did you know dolphins are just gay sharks?".  Fun music, too!  (Side note: last year before I started to watch Glee, I wanted to name my unborn son Finn.  Or Huck.  Or Hudson!  Three names used on that show!  Woah! I wanted Finn because it sounds so cool and he could be an Olympic swimmer.  Huck Haid sounded to redneck... and Hudson Haid sounded too much like a law firm.)

So it was a GREAT night! I can enjoy a book in the quiet of my home.  I even have the possibility of a baby STTN or waking only once and just needing a hug around 2 AM.

Go Blogs, Go! You're Cordially Invited to a Blog Party!

Go Blog(gers) go!
Go by car, go by bike.
Go by foot - run, skip or hike.
Go Blog(gers) go... stop at the tree
Climb the ladder to a
BLOG PARTY!

I am so excited to announce the place, time, and date of our Bloggers Meet Up. So excited that I broke into children's book prose and misquoted some P.D.Eastman (arguably the most read author in our home).

The poll on the sidebar was somewhat successful because it let me know that at least some other bloggers want to get together and meet in real life. Also, a number of people have contacted me via email or on Facebook, so I tried to come up with the best time and place to suit many people and to ensure a good time.

We will be meeting on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 1 PM. This is immediately following the St. James Grape and Fall Festival's downtown parade, which I will attend and sit outside of my cousin's store, and then promptly get in the car and drive to Rolla, Missouri to my all time Favorite Chinese Food Restaurant, Fortune Inn. I am so excited for others to join me and my one confirmed guest, Chrissy, that I am pretty sure I won't even get to eating my Egg Drop Soup before it gets chilled!

After reading so many Five Question Fridays, I feel like I know some of these authors already! I think it will also be fun to see what people sound like since the voice I use to read blogs is pretty much the same for each site.

So here is a blog button for you to have for your site (if you'd like!). My friend Chrissy converted the little poster I made into a blog button, and I confess, I do not know how to do this. I am thankful she does!

60 Years Married?

Today I attended a wedding anniversary party for my husband's grandmother's sister and brother in law.  (They call them Aunt Dee Dee and Uncle Earl -  aren't those great names?).

It was a special celebration for sixty years of marriage. SIXTY years.  Wow.  They were married when she was eighteen and its seems as if they have had a fantastic journey together for this span of time.  So many of their friends from the community, extended family, and children/grandchildren/great grandchildren were there to share in the afternoon (and the cake).

I loved that the decorations included family photos.  It was so neat to see their family develop over the years and to see happy snaps of holidays.   I also enjoyed looking at their wedding photos.

Of course, the first thing my husband and I did when we met in the room (we'd taken two different cars) was to join and hands and smile.  "Let's have a 60th party," I said.

I feel quite confident that I have only 55 years until I have been married for 60 years.  That is to say... I do not whatsoever want to divorce!.  I love this man, and our relationship is so strong.  We had an argument today and some stressful times (like he dropped all his donuts on the floor ... and... our kid wouldn't stop crying from 4 AM til 6 AM...) but really, we are still in love and still on the same team.  I believe that only death can separate us, and I am actually not looking forward to that one bit!

I wonder how many stories about marriage and how many lessons I could learn from Aunt Dee Dee and Uncle Earl... success stories like this make me what to sit at their feet and learn from people who are clearly self-made experts.

I think it will be such fun to have a family party like this and to show off our wedding photos, too.  I will be 82, so I imagine I will be wrinkled and he will be stooped, and we will have hazy memories of standing in the field on the hot, hot May afternoon while our friend Jalyn took this photo and we'd said our, "I do"s a half hour before.

With any luck (and good health) I will be wearing this ring...

That he designed for me with an H for our shared name...

and gave to me the day after my 22nd birthday..

When we are this old...
(Source - I don't know them, but aren't they sweet?)

To my faithful and patient husband who recently subscribed to this blog via email... thanks for who you are and giving me the goal of such a great party.  I think we need more champagne and dancing for our 60th, okay?  Perhaps some shuffleboard if we are on a cruise in the Mediterranean?)

How I Spent $14 in 90 Minutes.

It was our subdivision yard sale, an annual event.  Last year I was busy buying sleepers and baby socks, and the year before I was having a sale of my own.  I wonder if I will be buying or selling next year?

Here is what I found today:

A herd of dinosaurs.  The brachiosaurus is still in his carseat.  I don't know if he will like dinosaurs, but I assume he might, and at a quarter each, its a safe bet.  I tried to get some less scary looking ones, but really... aren't velociraptors the best dinosaurs? Its okay that I got two of them, right?

Wooden balancing toy... $2, negotiated from $4!
Construction car (dozer? scoop? IDK.) a quarter.
Uno game... free! We made a deal with some other games.

I think this is such a neat toy!  It is like a teeter totter, and the base and seat are separate.  The wooden donuts are too small for my son right now, but I think he will like this later on.  Its a thinking toy!

Double Twelve Dominoes!  I counted to be sure, and all 91 are there.  These are the nice, heavy ones.  We will play a lot of chicken foot with this set!  $1, plus the free Uno game.

Antique card game we spotted at the table with dominoes. $1.

It was in great condition!  It even included the rules and an advertisement from the company.
The jolliest game ever invented for an informal good time.
This is a hefty promise!

I guess you trade grains.  Doesn't sound all that jolly to me.

It says, "The greater the babel the more laughter and ludicrous the excitement."
It also says copyright 1919, so perhaps it is a different definition of ludicrous.  Or exitement.

Fantastic silk scarves.  Some are hand dyed!  Others are not.  But all were just a quarter!  I bought 9.  She gave me one for free!  These scarves had another life before me... one with a classy and fastidious elderly lady who also collected JFK memorbilia and had several wigs.

Two sets of jumbo wooden blocks.  Free!  They were thrown in with a lot from another sale.  I asked!

Playtex bottle set, unused, with 4 bottles and 8 extra nipples - $5.  This is a really good bargain.  They bottles were not used, either!

These were free - unopened mass quantities of breastmilk bags and other accesories!

Husby spotted this for $0.50.  He hated how the milk was scattered in our freezer.

Note: Some of these items are for a friend... friend, please act surprised when I give them to you!
8 pairs of socks for $0.60.

I love babies in stripes!  A quarter each.  I did not negotiate since I was already getting that free nursing gear.

I really liked these snap up onesies.  They are SO tiny.  I can't believe last year that these were almost baggy on my baby!  I think they were $0.50.  I little high for yard sale baby gear that is a dime a dozen, but these were unworn and just so appealing.

And these sets were also $0.50 each.  I could not resist!

Alligator swimming trunks! And a shirt to match! Ah.  So great!  Of course I will pay fifty cents.  What? I don't have a baby that can wear this?  Oh, well.  Maybe someday! Or maybe a gift! Wouldn't it be great with some baby SPF, a water toy, and a bucket hat?

Another gender neutral onesie for a un-determined gender baby.  A quarter.

And did you notice that these baby clothes are not girl-ish?  I guess I have learned about passing over baby girl-frilly-pretty-lovely sales for so long.  Or maybe I think my friends are having boy babies.

My favorite purchases of the day.  Small children's books from the 50s and 60s.  They were a nickel each!!!!  I think the stories are darling, but the illustrations are so wonderful. I am thinking this would be a great ESTY.com shop item!  The pages could be framed for lovely nursery prints.

Several books.  About $3 total.

Doesn't this book look like a hoot?  Its an easy reader and its from BEFORE PEOPLE WENT TO THE MOON.  How neat!

Example of the precious books.  This Bo-Peep story is 18 pages long!  The sheep go to a tea shop, then go buy hats, and then take naps. I didn't know that part of the story.

I love this page from the book called Animal Train.  This would be such a good framed print!

Here are some non-vintage books.  These are the best read alouds I found.  I especialy like Jamberry, the Jack Prelutsky poems, and The Night Before Christmas.

This toddler life vest was $1. It was techically from Husby's alloted $15 yardsale money.

Shape sorting toy for $0.25.  We tried it out already... its a bit advanced for him! Maybe after a little practice.

The last two photos are of something my husband spent 5 bucks on.  Its an ATARI.  That is a really old gaming system, so old that there is a switch to indicate if your TV set is colorful or black and white!

He had a hard time figuring out how to plug it in.  Its just so old!  He got the system and at least a dozen games for five bucks.  I think he will probably sell this for $50.  He isn't actually much of a gamer.

And one last look at my pretty, pretty scarves.
