When DHH was just five days old, I was first told that I was over-achieving and trying too hard as a mom.
By his pediatrician.
Who is a pretty smart and funny and wise guy.
But I took offense.
He couldn't believe that I asked for him to pose for a photo with my newborn.
He was surprised by my copious notes about his feeding patterns and diaper changes.
"They send you home from the hospital because he didn't need a nurse anymore", he said.
Yes, I probably over did it. But I wanted to be responsible and I was just so keyed up. I didn't want to mess anything up, and I was so sleep deprived (both from being up to feed the baby AND when I would sit next to his Moses basket and just watch him sleep when I should have been myself!).
I was Ultra Mom.
I tried Ultra Hard.
I've relaxed some these three years into motherhood.
I didn't bring a video camera to EK's first pediatrician appointment.
But I was upset about her lack of weight gain and almost humiliated that they suggested I supplement her nursing with those 2 oz (wasteful!) pre-made (chemical laden!) formula bottles.
I didn't feel like I failed, but I did feel like I was in danger of failing.
So I stepped my game back up and go to be more intense.
Here's a little proof that I over-do it on some mothering things.
Namely, recording Firsts.
Baby's First Tooth Brushing.
Its a peach baby toothbrush that DHH helped me choose when he chose for himself a battery-operated CARS toothbrush.
For those of you who are unaware, having a toothbrush with an on and off button makes it much more interesting and therefore much more of a likelihood that that you could avoid a tantrum about tooth brushing.
And the toothbrushers together.
Note: I'll wipe down that mirror for the next time an opportunity such as this presents itself!

I overdid it with my first baby too.
But as far as recording firsts, there are lots of people (like my SIL) who record NOTHING, and I find that far worse. To each his own, but I think if you are gonna err on one side or the other, better to do too much than not enough.
I have recorded pretty much nothing.
